What Kind of Manager are You?
Being the “boss” means different things to different people. As a result, the types of “boss” people are can be different as well. Think about the different managers you’ve had in your career. Each one was unique. They had different personalities, they looked different and they had different management styles.
I like to think I have a good management style (however, my opinion on the subject is irrelevant. It’s the people who work on my team who should offer that opinion). I know I’m not the best manager but I try to get better every day. My style is to be more like a coach. Not the kind that yells and screams and tells you exactly where you should be at any given moment on the court or field; the kind that encourages you to do your best, provides insight and guidance when you aren’t and most importantly, let’s you play the game to the best of your ability.
At CM Services, we try to make our work environment complement this style. We have monthly all staff training sessions (often presented by one of our own team members); at least once a month we buy lunch for everyone; we have a ping pong table in the office and an annual doubles tournament; we celebrate birthday’s once a month and on actual birthdays, people’s work areas are decorated.
We think all this leads to happier, more productive employees.
I read with interest a blog posting recently titled, “Managing with Empathy“. I can definitely relate to it – can you?
