101st Blog Posting – Am I a Good Communicator?

It’s hard to believe this is my 101st blog posting – but it is.

When I first began this blog, I was unsure and a little fearful.  I thought blogging would become an important communications vehicle and I thought it might be a way to connect with people I otherwise might not have the fortune of connecting with.  I was right on both counts.

Typically this blog focuses on leadership issues.  This posting will be no different.

I recently read an article titled, “7 Things Really Amazing Communicators Do”.  The article was excellent.  It reminded me that many great leaders were also great communicators.  I also think many average leaders elevated themselves to greatness because they were excellent communicators.  Communication is that important.

Read the article and let me know what you think.  I think the author has clearly identified seven key aspects of excellent communication:

1.  Connect.  Connect with your audience in a personal way.  If they empathize with you, they will listen to you.

2.  Engage.  Don’t be boring.  Engage your audience.  If you do, they’ll remember more of what you tell them.

3.  Disarm.  If you break down the walls your audience builds because they are skeptical of what you have to say, you will be more effective.

4.  Focus.  This is a key for me.  Good communicators don’t ramble on.  Their points are clear and concise.  They are focused.

5.  Clarify.  Speak simply.  Don’t use big words your audience may not understand.  If you are simple in your delivery, your points will be more clearly understood.

6.  Reinforce.  Reinforce your key points throughout your communications.  See if you can illustrate your points with stories or anecdotes.  This will help your audience retain what you say.

7.  Practice.  Great communicators aren’t born great.  They practice.  Practice your presentations in front of a mirror or videotape yourself.  The more you practice the better you’ll get at delivering clear, crisp communications that inspire and connect with your audiences.

If you do these things, I know you’ll be a better and more effective communicator.
